Empowering Educators: Trauma Awareness Training at Brookland Primary School

At Streetz Ahead, we believe that understanding and compassion are key to supporting children and young people—especially those who have experienced trauma. On 13th November 2024, our CEO, Elizabeth Lahav brought her wealth of knowledge in psychotherapy to Brookland Primary School, delivering an impactful trauma awareness session to their teaching staff.

The session aimed to equip educators with the tools to recognise and respond to signs of trauma in children and young people. By fostering this understanding, teachers can create safer, more supportive classroom environments where all pupils can thrive.

Key Focus Areas of the Training Included:

  • Recognising Trauma: Helping teachers identify behavioural signs that may indicate a child has experienced or is experiencing trauma.
  • Non-Violent Communication (NVC): Providing strategies to communicate with children in a way that promotes safety, trust, and understanding.
  • The Science Behind Trauma: Exploring how trauma impacts the brain, including an explanation of brain chemicals like cortisol and dopamine, and how these affect emotional regulation and behaviour.

Our CEO’s session encouraged teachers to approach interactions with empathy and to understand that challenging behaviours can often stem from unspoken experiences. By learning to recognise the signs and respond with care and compassion, teachers are better prepared to nurture emotional well-being alongside academic success.

This training reflects Streetz Ahead’s ongoing mission to support young people—not just through dance and creativity, but also by empowering the adults who care for them.

A big thank you to Brookland Primary School for welcoming us and for prioritising trauma awareness within their team. Together, we can continue to create safe, supportive spaces for every child to feel seen, heard, and understood.
